Djokovic wins his 4th US Open

Final day at 2023 US Open - Men’s Singles

2023 US Open, final Grand Slam tournament of the year, on Hard Outdoor, New York City, New York, USA, 28 August - 10 September 2023.

Carlos Alcaraz (3) who defeated Casper Ruud (5) 6-4 2-6 7-6(1) 6-3

Final:

Daniil Medvedev (3) (Russia) v Novak Djokovic (2) (Serbia)

The players last met in a US Open final in 2021 when Medvedev defeated Djokovic, squashing his bid for the years Grand Slam.

Djokovic broke Medvedev to love in the second game of the match and led 2-0.
Down 0-30, Djokovic steadied and held, consolidating the break for 3-0.

Serving at 2-5 to stay in the set, Medvedev saved two set points before holding for 3-5.
Djokovic served out the set 6-3.

Medvedev was taken to deuce three times in the opening game of set two, but held serve.
He saved a break point and survived four more deuces in the seventh game before holding, and led 4-3.
Djokovic let a 40-15 lead slip and had to save a break point before eventually holding serve. 4-4.

Djokovic saved a set point when serving at 5-6, before holding and forcing a tie break.
Both players lost one point on serve on the way to 5-5.
Medvedev served at 5-6 and lost he point, Djokovic taking the tie break and set 7-6(5).

Djokovic broke serve in the fourth game of set three, and Medvedev broke back immediately.
Djokovic led 3-2.
The third successive break saw Djokovic extend his lead to 4-2.

Djokovic consolidated comfortably for 5-2.
Medvedev served to stay in he match and held, leaving Djokovic to serve for it.

Novak Djokovic served out the match 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3 to claim his 4th US Open and return to the number #1 ranking.
