Final :
CoCo Gauff (6) (USA) v:Aryna Sabalenka (2) (Belarus)
Gauff had a 3-2 head to head record over Sabalenka coming into the final, although Sabalenka won the most recent contest - a quarter final at Indian Wells this year.
Both players were in their first US Open final.
In the final, Sabalenka broke serve in the opening game, then consolidated comfortably for 2-0.
Gauff broke back in the fourth game, thanks to a pair of double faults, and unforced errors from Sabalenka.
Gauff faced three break points in the fifth game due to forehand pressure from Sabalenka.
She saved two, but not the third, and was broken again. 3-2 Sabalenka.
Sabalenka saved two break points - one with a forehand winner, the next with an ace, eventually holding for 4-2.
Sabalenka broke Gauff once more in the seventh game and was one game away from the set 5-2.
She served out the set 6-2.
Gauff survived two double faults and two break points in the opening game of set two, and held for 1-0.
Sabalenka double faulted on break point in the fourth game and Gauff led 3-1.
Gauff saved a break point in the next game and consolidated for 4-1.
No more break points faced and Gauff served out the set 6-3.
Gauff broke Sabalenka in the opening game of the decider.
And again in the third game - Gauff led 3-0.
Sabalenka retrieved one of the breaks in the sixth game and trailed 2-4.
However Sabalenka dropped her next service game, leaving Gauff to serve for the match.
A love game and CoCo Gauff 2-6 6-3 6-2 became the 2023 US Open Women’s Singles Champion.
Her first Grand Slam singles trophy helps her to a new career ranking high of #3.
