Swiatek wins Madrid Open

Final day in Madrid.

2024 Mutua Madrid Open, a WTA 1000 tournament, on Clay Outdoor, Madrid, Spain, 23 April - 5 May 2024

Defending champion:
Aryna Sabalenka (2) who defeated Iga Swiatek (1) 6-3 3-6 6-3

A replay of last years final which Sabalenka won.
The pair met nine times before this final, and Swiatek won six of these matches.
The most recent was Swiatek winning a semi final of the 2023 WTA Finals.

The players exchanged service breaks in the opening two games of the match.
Swiatek saved three break points in game six, and Sabalenka saved two in game seven.
Sabalenka led 4-3.

Swiatek broke in game eleven and led 6-5.
She served out the set 7-5.

Sabalenka held serve to open set two.
There were then three successive breaks of serve, leaving Sabalenka ahead 3-1.
Swiatek made sure it was four, and stuck close at 2-3.

Serve was held in the next two games with no break points faced.
Sabalenka led 4-3.
Two more of the same and the lead was 5-4.

Serving at 4-5 to stay in the set, Swiatek was broken and Sabalenka levelled at 5-7 6-4.

Sabalenka saved two break points in game three of the decider before holding for 2-1.
Swiatek was broken in game four and Sabalenka led 3-1.
Swiatek broke straight back for 2-3.

No more break chances until Swiatek served to stay in the match at 5-6.
In the longest game of the match, Swiatek saved two match points before holding serve and forcing a tie break.

Sabalenka saved a match point at 5-6 in the tie break.
Swiatek saved a match point at 6-7.
Swiatek finally won the tie break 9-7 and the match 7-5 4-6 7-6(7).

Title number twenty for Iga Swiatek, and ninth at WTA 1000 level.
Third title in 2024, all WTA 1000 tournaments, Qatar and Indian Wells the other two.
