The two top ranked players in the world met in the final of the immediately preceding tournament - Madrid WTA 1000.
Swiatek won that trophy.
Swiatek broke the Sabalenka serve in game three of the opening set.
Sabalenka saved a break point in game five and held serve.
Swiatek led 3-2.
Sabalenka failed to hold serve in the seventh game and trailed 2-5.
Swiatek served out the set 6-2.
Swiatek saved five break points in game two of set two, and a further two break points in game four.
She held serve on both occasions and the score was 2-2.
Sabalenka dropped serve min the seventh game and trailed 3-4.
Serving at 3-5 to stay in the match, Sabalenka was broken again, and Swiatek took the match 6-2 6-3.
Title number 21 for Swiatek, four this year, and all at WTA 1000 level.
This one follows Qatar, Indian Wells and Madrid.
