Rublev wins Madrid Open

Final day in Madrid.

2024 Mutua Madrid Open, an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, on Clay Outdoor, Madrid, Spain, 23 April - 5 May 2024

Defending champion:
Carlos Alcaraz (1) who defeated lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4 3-6 6-3

Final:

Felix Auger-Aliassime (Canada) v Andrey Rublev (7) (Russia)

Rublev won four of the five meetings prior to the final.
Included was a second round victory in Rotterdam, February this year.
Interestingly, the only victory for Felix over Andrey was in the semis at the Rotterdam tournament in 2022.

Felix broke serve in the opening game of the match.
He consolidated for 2-0.
Rublev saved a break point in game three, and held to avoid going down a double break.

The players exchanged service breaks in games five and six to leave Felix ahead 4-2.

Rublev served at 3-5 to stay in the set.
He saved a set point before holding for 4-5.

Felix saved a break point on the way to serving out the set 6-4.

No break points faced by either player in set two until game six, and Felix saved that one.
3-3.

Felix served at 4-5 to say in the set and held.

He served at 5-6, again to stay in the set, but was broken and Rublev levelled at 4-6 7-5.

Felix saved two break points in game two of the decider.
He saved another two in game four.
Each time he held serve. 2-2.

Felix saved a break point in game eight.
He held for 4-4.

Serving at 5-6 to stay in the match, Felix was broken and Rublev won 4-6 7-5 7-5.

Title number sixteen for Andrey Rublev, and second this year, following the Hong Kong Open in January.
Second title at Masters 1000 level.following Monte Carlo in 2023.
