Paolini’s 1st WTA title in Portorož

Final in Portorož.

2021 Zavarovalnica Sava Portorož a WTA 250 tournament, on Hard, in Portorož, Slovenia, 13-19 September 2021.

No defending champion:
This is the revival of a tournament previously held from 2005-2010.

Final:

Alison Riske (3) (USA) v Jasmine Paolini (Italy)

This was the first meeting between the pair, and the first final for Paolini.
For Riske, the veteran American, it was her tenth final, and she was aiming for her third title, the last one coming in Rosmalen, June 2019.

The first three games saw breaks of serve, and Riske was ahead 2-1. Another dropped Italian serve in the seventh game had Riske leading 5-2.
Riske was broken to love serving for the set,
Paolini won ten successive points at one stage as she retrieved the situation. Riske served for the set a second time but again was broken and games were 5-5.
A tie break eventually decided the set, and points went to serve only three times out of the eleven points contested.
At 4-5, Riske lost both points on her serve, gifting the set to Paolini who led 7-6(4).

Paolini broke the American serve in game one of set two, and withstood a comeback in the very next game, saving three break points, before consolidating at 2-0.
Riske did break back in the fourth game, but that was her last hurrah as Paolini won four straight games after that to win the match.

Jasmine Paolini, in her first final, won the title 7-6(4) 6-2.
To win the trophy, Paolini had to overcome the tournament’s #2, #3, #4 and #6 seeds.
The win propelled her 23 places up to a career high ranking of #64.
