AO - Serena Williams d Bouchard, spells danger

A late start to the night session on Day / Night Four of the 2019 Australian Open on RLA.


Serena Williams (16) was scheduled to play Eugenie Bouchard in the first match.

Bouchard was broken in game one of set one, two double faults to finish.

A bunch of Canadian errors and triple game point for Williams who sealed it with a service winner. 2-0.

A Bouchard backhand winner and ace had her at 40-15, but backhand failure and another double fault saw a second break of serve. Williams 3-0.

Two winners and an ace had Williams ahead 40-30, but a pair of Bouchard winners handed her a break point, and she did win one of the breaks back. 1-3.

Williams forced errors on the backhand and Bouchard was down triple break point.  She saved two of these with forehands, but a Williams winning forehand won her the break. 4-1, Bouchard yet to hold serve.


A series of Williams mistakes cost her the next service game but she still held the advantage 4-2.  Only one service hold in six games.

Two Bouchard unforced errors from 30-30 and Williams broke for a third time to lead 5-2.  Would serve for the set.

A Williams service winner brought up three set points.  One was saved, but a forehand winner on the second gave Williams the set 6-2.


Bouchard saved three break points in the opening game of set two, and held when Williams was errant on her backhand.

Williams double faulted but recovered to be level at 1-1.

Bouchard saved another break point and was ahead 2-1.  Down 0-30, Williams delivered two service winners and levelled 2-2.  Triple break point faced by Bouchard after a string of errors.  Another one and the break gave Williams a 3-2 edge.

Williams consolidated the break, the final point an ace. 4-2.

Backhand and forehand winners helped Williams to gain three break points on the next Bouchard service game.  One was saved, but a double fault gave Williams a 5-2 lead.

Three forehand winners, one on the first of two match points, and Serena Williams won 6-2 6-2.
