AO - Federer d Evans but not that simple

Roger Federer (3) played qualifier Daniel Evans in the final Day Session match on RLA on Day Three of the 2019 Australian Open.


Federer served first, and the opening games were a servers delight.

Through seven games, Evans had won 11 of 15 points on serve.

He still trailed 3-4 with serve to come.

A Federer forehand winner was followed by a shocking Swiss miss.  Evans held, steering past deuce, incorporating some clutch serves. 4-4.

A winning Federer backhand had a winning Evans response.  Federer at the net was in control and proceeded to earn two game points.

Slight rain delay.

Upon resumption, Federer held serve, and Evans missed wide to be down 15-30.  A forehand winner restored him to parity, and two Federer errors brought it to 5-5.


Two excellent backhand volleys from Federer highlighted a love game and Evans would be serving to remain alive in the set.

Two Swiss mistakes and 30-0 for Evans.  Federer approached and won at the net.  A wide backhand from Federer and two game points for Evans.   Federer attacked the net again and it was deuce.  A winning Evans forehand produced another game point, but good court coverage from Federer returned them to deuce.  Set point after an Evans miss.  Saved with a winning volley.  Wonderful net play from Evans and game point.  Tiebreak required.

After leading 5-3 in the tiebreak, Evans surrendered the final four points and Federer took the set 7-6(5).


Evans served first in set two.  15-15 after errors.  A Federer backhand pass and 15-30.  Two break points after another error. The break came, and Federer could now take control of this match.  A love game, including an exquisite half volley.  2-0.  Evans served up a treat, but was still behind a break 1-2.

After serving an ace to be 40-15, Federer was taken to deuce and then an Evans backhand winner brought up break point.  Federer saved it by going forward to the net, and he ultimately held on for 3-1.

At 3-5,  Evans was behind 0-15, then volleyed into open court for a winner.  A brilliant backhand volley from Federer, then an Evans forehand winner - 30-30.  Set point after an angled Federer backhand.  Saved with a winning Evans backhand down the line.

Another set point following a Federer winner. Saved with a forehand winner.  Game point vanished with a Federer cross court forehand.  A second game point was converted and Evans trailed 4-5.


Serving for the set, Federer was leading 15-0, but Evans outgunned him at the net, then Federer pushed one long - 15-30.  Double fault and two break back points.  One saved.  A backhand pass for the break and 5-5.

A tiebreak was reached.


The master of tiebreaks is Roger Federer and he raced through another, to lead 7-6(5) 7-6(3)


In the third set, Evans was serving at 1-2 and 40-0.  Then a half volley winner, backhand volley winner, and backhand down the line winner, all off the Federer racquet, brought things back to deuce.

A good serve and game point for Evans.  A forehand miss from Evans and another trip to deuce.

Service holds until Federer was at the line, 5-3 and the chance to win through to the third round.

An ace, one that didn’t come back, a volley winner, and on the first of three match points, a backhand winner.

Roger Federer won 7-6(5) 7-6(3) 6-3 in a tougher than expected encounter.
