Murray back - defeats Edmund

As we recover from the shock of Serena Williams suffering her worst defeat ever (statistically) in San Jose, there are second round matches to be played in Mexico, Austria and the USA on Day Three of main draw action.

Kitzbuhel:

Young Spaniard Jaume Munar defeated Robin Haase (4), ten years his senior, 7-6(5) 6-4

Taro Daniel defeated Laslo Djere 6-3 6-2

Maximilian Marterer (6) defeated Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3 6-4

Qualifier Denis Istomin defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber (2) 5-7 6-3 6-1

Qualifier Martin Klizan defeated Dominic Thiem (1) 6-1 1-6 7-5

Two clay court event disappointments in a row for Thiem, probably second only to Nadal this year as a specialist on the surface.

Dusan Lajovic (8) defeated wildcard Dennis Novak 6-2 6-4

Matteo Berrettini defeated Radu Albot 6-3 6-7(3) 6-1

Nicolas Jarry defeated Fernando Verdasco (3) 6-7(6) 7-5 6-3

The top five seeds have been eliminated in their opening matches and only two seeds have reached the quarter finals which are -

Qualifier Martin Klizan v Dusan Lajovic (8)

Jaume Munar v Taro Daniel

Matteo Berrettini v Nicolas Jarry

Maximilian Marterer (6) v qualifier Denis Istomin

Washington:

WTA

First round

With top seed Caroline Wozniacki withdrawing from the Citi Open with a leg injury, her replacement in the main draw is Belgian lucky loser Ysaline Bonaventure.  Her first round match with Ukraine qualifier Anhelina Kalinina was one of four unable to be played yesterday due to weather delays.

Bonaventure won 6-3 6-3 when play resumed on Day Three

Saisai Zheng defeated wildcard Katie Swan 6-2 6-4

Jennifer Brady defeated Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-1 6-4

Magda Linette defeated Olivia Rogowska 6-4 6-1

Second round

Andrea Petkovic defeated Sloane Stephens (2) in a huge upset 2-6 6-4 6-2

Andrea was down a set and a break but overwhelmed the crowd favourite and world number three to earn the first quarter final spot.  Petkovic, a former top ten player, has enjoyed success in Washington, finalist in 2013 and semi finalist last year.

Qualifier Allie Kiick and Katie Boulter had their match halted due to bad weather

ATP

First round

Wildcard Tommy Paul defeated qualifier Alex Bolt 3-6 7-6(0) 6-2

21 year old Paul, from the USA, made the quarters of Washington last year, beating Lucas Pouille along the way.  This is his first main draw appearance in an ATP Tour event for 2018, his other performances consigned to the Challenger and Futures circuits.

Second round

Frances Tiafoe (13) defeated Hubert Hurkacz 6-2 6-4

Marius Copil defeated Jérémy Chardy (14) 6-4 6-4

Denis Kudla defeated Karen Khachanov (12) 6-2 6-3

James Duckworth defeated fellow Aussie and lucky loser Jason Kubler 1-6 6-2 7-6(5)

Kubler replaced another Australian, fifth seed Nick Kyrgios, in the main draw after Nick’s late withdrawal from the tournament.  The injury suffered in Atlanta last week must still be a worry.

Mischa Zverev (15) defeated wildcard Tim Smyczek 6-2 7-6(7)

Denis Shapovalov (9) defeated wildcard Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-1 6-4

Stefanos Tsitsipas (10) defeated Jared Donaldson 3-6 6-3 7-5 after Donaldson had match points when serving at 5-4.

Lucas Pouille (6) defeated qualifier Vincent Millot 6-7(2) 6-4 3-0 (retired)

Andy Murray defeated Kyle Edmund (4) 7-6(4) 1-6 6-4

Sascha Zverev (1) defeated Malek Jaziri 6-2 6-1

David Goffin (3) defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-2 1-6 7-6(5)

Hyeon Chung (8) defeated Marcos Baghdatis 6-7(2) 6-4 6-3

Kei Nishikori (7) defeated qualifier Donald Young 6-3 6-4

Three matches need to be finished on Day Four thanks to bad weather stopping play.

San Jose:

Elise Mertens (4) defeated wildcard Ashley Kratzer 6-2 6-0

Danielle Collins defeated Vera Lapko 6-1 3-6 6-1

Johanna Konta defeated Sofia Kenin 6-1 6-4

Top seed Garbiñe Muguruza withdrew from the tournament ahead of her  second round match with Vika Azarenka, citing an arm injury.  Her place was taken by lucky loser Anna Blinkova.

Blinkova wasn’t as lucky in her main draw match, falling to Azarenka 6-1 6-0

Azarenka will play Collins and Konta will play Mertens in the quarter finals

The remaining four second round matches are scheduled for Day Four

So top seeds gone from both Washington and San Jose without hitting a ball.  Disappointing for the fans.

Los Cabos:

Damir Dzumhur (3) defeated Thomas Fabbiano 7-6(0) 7-6(5)

Michael Mmoh defeated Peter Polansky 7-6(1) 7-6(2)

Cameron Norrie defeated Feliciano López (8) 6-3 6-3

Adrian Mannarino (4) defeated Elias Ymer 6-0 6-2

Yoshihito Nishioka defeated Taylor Fritz (7) 7-6(3) 6-1

Juan Martin del Potro (1) defeated qualifier Marcos Giron 7-5 6-3

Egor Gerasimov defeated Sam Querrey (5) 7-5 5-7 7-6(6)

Fabio Fognini (2) defeated Quentin Halys 2-6 6-4 6-0

Quarter finals are:

Juan Martin del Potro (1) v Egor Gerasimov

Damir Dzumhur (3) v Michael Mmoh

Cameron Norrie v Adrian Mannarino (4)

Yoshihito Nishioka v Fabio Fognini (2)
