Kvitová on target for New Haven title

The composition of all quarter finals in New Haven and Winston-Salem was determined following the completion of second and third round matches.

WTA Connecticut Open in New Haven:

Second round

  • Aryna Sabalenka defeated defending champion Dasha Gavrilova (9) in a long and close match where service was broken 16 rimes, 6-3 6-7(6) 7-5.  Sabalenka will play lucky loser Belinda Bencic in the quarter finals
  • Ekaterina Makarova defeated Magdalena Rybarikova 2-6 6-3 6-3.  Makarova will play Julia Goerges (5) in the quarter finals
  • Petra Kvitová (3) defeated qualifier Zarina Diyas 6-1 5-7 6-2.  Kvitová will play Carla Suarez Navarro in the quarter finals
  • Qualifier Monica Puig defeated Anett Kontaveit 6-4 6-3.  Puig will play Caroline Garcia (2) in the quarter finals

Only three seeds drawn to make the quarters did so - Simona Halep (1), Ash Barty (6), and Kiki Bertens (7) all were late withdrawals, and were replaced by lucky losers (one, Belinda Bencic, made it through to the quarters)

Added to this were losses by Czech players Karolina Pliskova (4) and Barbora Strycova (8), both in the first round.

Interesting to note that the 8 quarter finalists are from 8 different nations.

ATP Winston-Salem Open in Winston-Salem:

Third round

  • Daniil Medvedev defeated lucky loser Guido Andreozzi 7-5 6-1.
  • Ryan Harrison defeated Filip Krajinovic (7) 6-3 7-6(4) and will play Daniil Medvedev in the quarter finals
  • Nicolas Jarry (14) defeated Jan-Lennard Struff 6-2 6-2
  • Taro Daniel defeated lucky loser Dominik Koepfer 7-6(4) 7-6(3) and will play Nicolas Jarry in the quarter finals
  • Steve Johnson (8) defeated Jaume Munar 6-4 6-4
  • Wildcard Kyle Edmund (3) defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 7-5 7-5 and will play Steve Johnson in the quarter finals
  • Hyeon Chung (6) defeated Matteo Berrettini 6-3 3-6 6-3
  • Pablo Carreno Busta (2) defeated Peter Gojowczyk (16) 6-2 7-6(5) and will play Hyeon Chung in the quarter finals

The bottom half of the draw has seen all the expected seeds through to the final eight, whereas the top half has three unseeded players in the final four.

Of course, two seeds were late withdrawals - David Goffin (1) and Damir Dzumhur (5) - and both were replaced with lucky losers.  The other two seeds drawn for quarter final action were both knocked out prior to the quarters.  Only Nicolas Jarry (14) remains in the top half to fly the flag for the seeds.

The 8 quarter finalists are from 7 different nations
