Djokovic won three of the five previous meetings between the players.
This includes the most recent two wins - 2023 Cincinnati Masters final, and 2023 ATP Finals semis.
However, of most significance, last years Wimbledon final saw a win for Alcaraz, and cost Djokovic the calendar year Grand Slam.
In the opening game of the match, there were seven deuces, and Djokovic saved four break points.
He couldn’t save a fifth, and Alcaraz broke to lead 1-0.
Djokovic was broken again in the fifth game, and trailed 1-4.
Alcaraz saved a break point in game six, then held.
Djokovic served at 1-5 to stay in the set.
He held.
Alcaraz served out the set 6-2.
Alcaraz broke Djokovic in the opening game of set two.
Djokovic broken again in the seventh game and trailed 5-2.
Alcaraz served out the set 6-2.
Djokovic saved four break points in game three of set three, and held for 2-1.
Alcaraz saved a break point in game six, and held to level at 3-3.
Djokovic was broken in the ninth game and trailed 4-5.
Alcaraz served for the match and led 40-0.
Incredibly all three match points were saved and Djokovic broke back for 5-5.
A tie break was required.
Alcaraz won the tie break and the match 6-2 6-2 7-6(4).
He successfully defended his Wimbledon title and won his fourth Grand Slam trophy.
