WTA - Brady’s first title in Lexington

Final day in Lexington.

2020 Top Seed Open a WTA international tournament, on Hard Deco Turf II, in Lexington, Kentucky, USA, 10-16 August 2020.

Defending champion:

This is a new tournament.

The final:

- Jil Teichmann (Switzerland) v Jennifer Brady (USA)

The third meeting between the pair began with Brady confidently holding serve; the left handed Teichmann with a couple of winning volleys, levelled things, although was taken to deuce in doing so.

After a Brady love game, Teichmann felt the first real pressure, two double faults creating a break point in the following game. It was saved by a loose backhand from Brady and serve was eventually held for 2-2.

Teichmann saved three more break points in the sixth game, and then it was Brady having to defend.

In the longest game of the match, the American found herself down 15-40. A fine second serve forced a wayward return and saved one break point, and a forehand winner into the corner brought it to deuce. A third break chance was lost thanks to an ace, and a fourth when Teichmann’s forehand return was wide. Brady held for 4-3.

Down 15-30, Teichmann was feeling the heavy groundstrokes of Brady, and a winning backhand down the line presented two break chances. Only one was needed as a miscued Swiss forehand ended the game, and Brady would serve for the set.

Quickly, it was 40-0, highlighted by a forehand drive winner and an ace, and three set points were on offer. These disappeared, a Teichmann forehand return winner, a double fault, and a Brady forehand miss. A fourth set point was saved when the American sent a backhand long, but a fifth chance was converted after Teichmann netted a forehand.

Despite a woeful first serve percentage in the thirties, Jennifer Brady captured the opening set 6-3.

Brady continued her dominance in set two, and from 15-0 in the opening game, Teichmann lost three straight points to face a couple of break points. One was saved, but then a wide forehand confirmed a 1-0 lead for Brady, which she consolidated easily for 2-0.

Teichmann held after visiting deuce twice, and for the next period both players were comfortable at the line.

At 4-3, Brady had her most difficult time, two deuces before extending the lead to within one of the finish line.

Serving at 5-4, Brady moved to 30-0, Teichmann netting an attempted forehand return, then putting a backhand into the same net. At 30-15, Teichmann pushed a backhand wide, and Brady had two championship points.

An off forehand winner on the first match point finished the deal for Jennifer Brady.

A WTA title in her first final, and as a result, Brady moves up nine places to a career high of #40.
