Quarter finals

- Alexander Zverev (1) v Cristian Garin

The two had never met before this match.

Zverev served first and held easily, a backhand winner the highlight. Garin was 40-0, after a winning backhand and Zverev errors, but lost the next five points to relinquish his serve and trail 0-2. Zverev consolidated, passing Garin at the net with a cross court forehand, followed by an ace, losing a couple of points here and there, but sealing the game with another booming ace. 3-0.

Garin finally registered on the board after a love game on serve, attacking the German backhand, then cleverly using a drop shot to draw Zverev to the net before passing him with a deft forehand. A failed return clinched the game. Zverev reached game point, an ace amongst the points won, but an unforced backhand mistake plus a useless drop shot attempt, gave a break back point to Garin. A Chilean backhand winner confirmed the break and games were back on serve.

After levelling at 4-4, Garin had another crack at the Zverev serve. He opened with two effective backhands which both produced Zverev errors. Down three break points, Zverev was relieved to see a Garin forehand miss the court, and save one. A big serve allowed Zverev to control the next rally, finished with a simple put away and a second break point save. A forehand floating long, however, cost the top seed, and Garin would serve for the set.

Zverev displayed his frustration after committing an unforced error to give Garin 30-15. He directed his anger into positive shot making in the next rally and 30-30. But the backhand let Zverev down once more and Garin arrived at set point. A complete Zverev mishit ended the set in Garin’s favour 6-4

Zverev was broken in game three of set two, but in the sixth game he struck back hard. He pressured Garin into error twice, then produced a fabulous lob to achieve triple break point. Only one needed as Garin stuffed up a forehand. 3-3.

At 4-4, Zverev double faulted and it didn’t improve. A second double fault and a Chilean backhand down the line winner meant Zverev faced two break points. The break was confirmed and Garin went to the line to serve for a big upset win.

Three match points came the way of Garin, on three separate occasions. The first was saved with a slice from the top seed which messed up the Garin volley. The second vanished when a Garin forehand found the net. An overhit backhand cost Garin his third match point. Zverev somehow broke the serve, sealing it with a forehand winner.

5-5 and still in the match.

Riding a surge in confidence, and taking the home nation crowd with him, Zverev held serve, then used a second set point on the Garin serve to advantage. The Chilean pushed a backhand wide and the match was level. Zverev took the set 7-5.

In the first seven games of the decider, the pair exchanged two service breaks each. Garin saved two break points to level at 4-4, but he was back at the line in a flash after Zverev held to love.

Serving to stay in the contest, Garin was passed by a Zverev backhand, hit a backhand into the net, hit a winning backhand of his own, and was beaten again by a German backhand. Two match points for Zverev.

One saved by a put away at the net, set up by a forehand down the line. The second saved when Zverev hit a forehand wide. Garin held serve following a forehand winner and a Zverev error.

Garin scooped a forehand into open court, welcomed a Zverev double fault, and saw the top seed hit a backhand too long. Three break points faced by Zverev. One saved by excellent net play. Incredibly a second double fault for the game cost Zverev his serve, and Garin would serve for the match, for a second time.

Zverev missed with a backhand, then was passed by a Garin backhand cross court winner. A stunning down the line forehand winner gave Garin three match points. A forehand hit straight at Zverev sitting at the net, was too much for the top seed and Cristian Garin produced a huge upset, defeating Alexander Zverev 6-4 5-7 7-5.
