Madrid - ATP second round complete

The sexond round of the men’s draw in Madrid is complete.

Mutua Madrid Open - an ATP Masters 1000 category tournament, on Red Clay, in Madrid, Spain,  4-11 May 2019.

Defending champion:

Alexander Zverev (2) who defeated Dominic Thiem (5) 6-4 6-4

Secomd round:

- Laslo Djere v Juan Martin del Potro (7)

This would be the first time the two had met.

Djere went to the line first, and both players held serve through five games, break points saved in each of the first three. Djere broke del Potro in the sixth game, converting the second of two break opportunities. 4-2.

The Serb consolidated the break and was only a game away from taking the opening set. del Potro then delivered  a love game forcing Djere to serve for it.

A powerful forehand and an ace took the score to 40-0 and three set points. del Potro returned a ball out of court and the set went to Serbia 6-3.

del Potro began set two with a love game, as did Djere, and after three games the Argentine led 2-1. This was extended to 3-1, when Djere dropped serve in the fourth game, despite the Serb having 40-30. A strong forehand from del Potro took it to deuce, and two Djere errors cost him.

Three holds of serve and del Potro led 5-2.  From 40-15, Djere hit three errant forehands and faced set point. A big serve saved it. A second set point was saved with another big serve. A del Potro winning forehand earned him a third set point, and a backhand miss from Djere ensured that the set was going to South America 6-2.

In the decider, games went to serve for ten games, but Djere had to do it the hard way in game six, taken to deuce six times, wasting three game points, and saving three break points. He also saved a match point in the tenth game.

Despite his struggles to maintain pace with del Potro, Djere was the one to actually achieve a service break - in game eleven - to lead 6-5. On the first of two match points, the Serb completed a victory.
