Alcaraz wins Madrid Open

Final day in Madrid.

2023 Mutua Madrid Open, an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, on Clay, in Madrid, Spain, 25 April - 7 May 2023.

Defending champion:
Carlos Alcaraz (7) who defeated Alexander Zverev (2) 6-3 6-1

Final:

Carlos Alcaraz (1) (Spain) v lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff (Germany)

Struff became the first lucky loser to make the final of a Masters 1000 tournament.

A pair of double faults in the opening game of the match helped Struff to drop serve and trail 0-1.
A lengthy second game saw Alcaraz taken to deuce on multiple occasions, once having to save a break point.
He eventually held for 2-0.

Struff broke back to love in the fourth game, the final point a backhand return winner. 2-2.

Serving at 3-3, Struff led 40-15 but lost the next three points and faced a break point.
He saved that. However a double fault on a second break point gave Alcaraz the lead 4-3.

Struff served at 3-5 to stay in the set and held comfortably.

Alcaraz served at 5-4 for the set.
A forehand unforced error from the top seed, then a forehand mishit. 0-30.
A backhand miss from Alcaraz 0-40. Return wide from Struff 15-40.
Return long from Struff 30-40. Lob winner from Alcaraz. Deuce.

Return from Struff netted. Set point.
Forehand winner from the top seed and the set was his 6-4.

Struff bounced back quickly, holding serve in the opening game of set two, then breaking the Alcaraz serve.
Struff consolidated the break for 3-0. 

In a fifteen minute fifth game, Struff saved five break points before extending his lead to 4-1.

Alcaraz served at 2-5 to stay in the set, and held to love.

Struff served at 5-3 for the set.
Alcaraz forehand wide. Struff backhand netted. 15-15.
Alcaraz off forehand winner. 15-30. Alcaraz netted a backhand 30-30.
Ace brought up set point.
The set was won by Struff 6-3 after he snuck a volley over the net and out of reach.

Alcaraz saved a break point in game three of the decider, held serve, then broke Struff in the following game for a 3-1 advantage.

Struff served at 2-5 to stay in the match.
He was taken to deuce but held on.

Alcaraz served for the match at 5-3.
A love game ended the match which Alcaraz won 6-4 3-6 6-3, a successful defence of his title.
