2022 champion (not defending):
Leylah Fernandez (2) who defeated Camila Osorio (5) 6-7(5) 6-4 7-6(3)
Final:
Caroline Garcia (1) (France) v Donna Vekic (3) (Croatia)
The players had previously met nine times, with Vekic winning five of those matches.
However eight of those matches were contested in the period 2012 - 2019, and the most recent was Vekic winning a match in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
A form guideline is impossible to gain from that history.
Vekic was the first to strike in the final, breaking the Garcia serve in game three.
Games went with serve from there, and Vekic served for the set at 5-4.
Down 0-40, Vekic saved all three break back points, and proceeded to hold serve and take the set 6-4.
Garcia was broken in the opening game of set two.
Vekic stretched the lead after saving a break point in game two.
Garcia retrieved the break in game four. 2-2.
Garcia broke again in the sixth game.
Vekic served at 2-5 to stay in the set, and saved a set point before holding.
Garcia served at 5-3 for the set.
Two aces and a forehand winner gave her three set points.
One was saved with a Vekic backhand winner.
However, a backhand return out of court finished the set. Garcia had levelled the match 4-6 6-3.
Vekic saved four break points in the opening game of the decider before holding serve.
Garcia was taken to deuce a couple of times in the fourth game, but levelled at 2-2.
Vekic saved another four break points in the seventh game, holding serve again.
Serving at 5-6, Garcia was broken to love, and Vekic won the match 6-4 3-6 7-5 to claim the title.
This was title number four from eleven finals for Donna Vekic, and her first since Courmayeur in October 2021.
