Swiatek triumphant in Indian Wells

Final day in Indian Wells.

2022 BNP Paribas Open a WTA 1000 tournament, on Hard Plexipave, in Indian Wells, California, USA, 9-20 March 2022.
Event held last year from 6-17 October 2021.

Defending champion:
Paula Badosa (21) who defeated Victoria Azarenka (27) 7-6(5) 2-6 7-6(2)

Final :

Iga Swiatek (3) (Poland) v Maria Sakkari (6) (Greece)

Sakkari had won the first three contests between the pair, but Swiatek won the fourth, a semi final in Doha last month.

Swiatek won four titles from the five finals she played before this one, Doha being the most recent.

Sakkari had one trophy in her cabinet from four final appearances, winning in Morocco in May 2019.
She was a finalist in St Petersburg last month, losing to Anett Kontaveit.

Swiatek served first and was broken.  This triggered a series of dropped serves - six out of the first seven games - which left Swiatek ahead 4-3.
Serving at 4-5 to stay in the set, Sakkari saved two set points, but Swiatek converted the third and led 6-4.

Sakkari saved two break points to level at 1-1 in set two, but was broken in games four and six.
Swiatek didn’t face a break point in the set, and raced to a 6-4 6-1 victory.

The triumph was the fifth for Swiatek, and it allowed her to move to a career high ranking of #2.
Sakkari, with her efforts, moved to a career high ranking of #3.
