Final in San Diego.
2021 San Diego Open - an ATP 250 tournament, on Hard, in San Diego, California, USA, 27 September - 3 October 2021.
No defending champion:
This is a new tournament on the ATP calendar.
Final:
Cameron Norrie (Great Britain) v Casper Ruud (2) (Norway)
The pair had never met in an ATP match before this final.
Norrie was aiming for his second title from a sixth final, his first title coming in Los Cabos, July this year.
In his eighth final, Ruud was looking for his sixth title, fifth this year, having already captured trophies in Geneva in May, and Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel in July.
Norrie was broken each of the three times he served in set one.
Ruud didn’t face a break point in the first set. He contributed just one love game, and that was when serving for the set which he took 6-0.
Neither player faced a break point for the first five games of set two.
In game six, Norrie found himself down 15-40. He saved the first break point, but Ruud converted the second by sending a withering backhand down the line winner to break and lead 4-2.
A love game consolidated the break, and Norrie then led 30-0 in an attempt to stay alive in the eighth game. A British backhand landed wide. 30-15. An attempted drop shot from the same racquet failed. 30-30. A another backhand from Norrie finished wide, giving Ruud match point.
A final Norrie mishit finished the match.
Casper Ruud captured his fifth title of the year, and his first ever trophy won on a hard court.
