Pavlyuchenkova wins RG semi final

Roland Garros 2021 - Day Twelve Women’s Singles semi finals

Roland Garros a Grand Slam tournament, on Clay, in Paris, France, 30 May - 13 June 2021.
Event held last year from 27 September - 11 October 2020 due to COVID-19.

Semi final:


Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (31) (Russia) v Tamara Zidansek (Slovenia)


The first semi final featured two players in their first meeting.


Pavlyuchenkova saved the first of two break points in the opening game but a wayward forehand cost her on the second, and Zidansek led 1-0.

An off forehand winner highlighted a love game to consolidate the break for Zidansek and 2-0.

Pavlyuchenkova settled, contributing a love game of her own, 1-2.

From 0-40, Zidansek hit a forehand winner and then saved the other two break points. However, Pavlyuchenkova converted the next opportunity following errors from the Slovenian racquet. 2-2.


After serves were held, Zidansek was 3-4 and at the line. Drop shot and forehand winners assisted Zidansek to 40-0, but she was brought back to deuce. A double fault and break point. A wild forehand and Pavlyuchenkova broke for 5-3.

Serving for the set, Pavlyuchenkova received a winner and and error from Zidansek’s forehand. An ace gave Pavlyuchenkova 30-15, but an error made it 30-30. An extraordinary backhand off the top of Zidansek’s racquet landed on the base line to give her a break back point.

It was saved. Another break chance after a Zidansek cross court forehand winner. Saved again. An off forehand winner for break point number three. Pavlyuchenkova hit long and dropped serve.

A backhand volley winner from Zidansek, and Russian errors, gave us 5-5.

Winners from both wings set up two break points for Zidansek in the eleventh game. Both saved. Pavlyuchenkova held serve on her second game point.

Again serving to stay in the set, Zidansek produced a drop shot winner. But two errors, the second forced, made it 15-30. A long forehand and two set points for the Russian. A double fault and Pavlyuchenkova took the set 7-5.


Set two began with Pavlyuchenkova serving and Zidansek hitting a winner. Another brought it to deuce. A wide Pavlyuchenkova backhand and a break opportunity. Saved. Serve held, sealed with a Pavlyuchenkova off forehand winner. 1-0.

In a game of errors, Zidansek was taken to deuce before unleashing another forehand winner. A double fault and deuce once more. A Pavlyuchenkova drop shot and break point. A Slovenian forehand winner saved it. Zidansek couldn’t save the next one as she netted a backhand. Pavlyuchenkova led 2-0.


Two winners from Zidansek, the second an impressive overhead, produced two break back points, and a double fault confirmed it. 1-2.

The third successive break of serve featured a down the line special from Pavlyuchenkova who now led 3-1.

Three big forehands and a backhand winner consolidated the position for Pavlyuchenkova. 4-1.

A love game littered with winners from Zidansek and she trailed 2-4.


Two double faults spelt trouble for Pavlyuchenkova and Zidansek was back on serve 3-4.

Two Zidansek errors from 30-30 and Pavlyuchenkova broke to lead 5-3.

Serving for the match, Pavlyuchenkova received a backhand error from Zidansek, then hit a backhand winner. 30-0. Forced Russian backhand error. 30-15. Backhand return long and two match points. A Zidansek backhand wide finished the match,

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova won her way into the Roland Garros women’s singles final 7-5 6-3.
