WTA round of sixteen

  • Kiki Bertens (7) v Garbiñe Muguruza (20)

Bertens served first and faced break point following a Spanish backhand forcing an error.  It was saved.  A second break chance to Muguruza was wasted with a poor drop shot attempt, and Bertens held on for 1-0.

Muguruza made it 1-1 with a couple of winners, then a double fault from Bertens plus attacking play from her opponent led to two break points.

An ace cleared one, but a Muguruza backhand was too good and Bertens dropped serve.

Upon consolidating the break Muguruza gained another chance to break the Dutch serve after a quality lob winner.  Bertens steadied and held serve, trailing 2-3.

From 30-0, Muguruza lost her way.  She saved a break point with a wonderful volley, but a double fault on the next break point left games at 3-3.

Muguruza struck back immediately with a service break, and then held for a 5-3 advantage, saving three break points.

Bertens held easily and asked Muguruza to serve it out, but she couldn’t and the break back levelled the set again 5-5.

Muguruza had break opportunities in game eleven which came to nothing, before Bertens took the lead, forcing Muguruza to hold and stay in the set.

At 40-0, a tie break appeared certain.

However, a Bertens forehand down the line winner, and three unforced errors from Muguruza brought up set point for the seventh seed.

A backhand volley saved it.  Another set point disappeared, but the third chance was converted thanks to a brilliant Dutch forehand.  7-5 Bertens.

On a roll, Bertens began set two holding serve, despite a double fault.  Muguruza, from 40-0, again found a way to land in trouble, errors from both sides then a double fault.  A Spanish volley mistake and break point.  Saved with an ace.  A big serve saved a second break point.  Better ground strokes from Muguruza helped her level at 1-1, a winning volley the final shot.

The next four games were Spanish, as Muguruza dramatically changed the course of the match.

Rather than languish in the disappointment of losing the opening set, one with which she was in control, Muguruza continued with her game plan, attacking Bertens with all the weapons at her disposal.

A willingness to often come to the net behind strong serves and big ground strokes, continually leaving Bertens at or behind the baseline was paying huge dividends.

Bertens served at 1-5 to stay in the set.  An ace for 30-30, but an outstanding Muguruza lob for set point.  A Bertens backhand sailed long and Muguruza levelled things 5-7 6-1.

The decider began with two service holds, Bertens the more difficult, taken to deuce twice.  But it was the seventh seed who made the first significant move, breaking the Muguruza serve in game three, a backhand winner sealing it.

Unperturbed, Muguruza replied with a love game to break straight back.

For the next little while serve was held comfortably and 4-4 arrived.

Muguruza dropped just one point in holding for 5-4, and Bertens had to serve to stay in the match.

A Muguruza backhand forced an error. 0-15.  Backhand down the line winner from Spain 0-30.  Service winner from Bertens 15-30.  Forcing Bertens overhead 30-30.  A little lucky with the net and match point for Muguruza.  In arguably the point of the match, Bertens pushed the final backhand shot wide and Garbiñe Muguruza won a fascinating match 5-7 6-1 6-4
