Further round robin matches have been played in Zhuhai for the Hengqin Life WTA Elite Trophy.
ROSE GROUP
Anett Kontaveit (10) defeated defending champion Julia Goerges (5)
Kontaveit had been smashed by Mertens in her first match, but started brilliantly against Goerges, breaking the German serve in the opening game, and again to lead 4-1, with solid delivery from the line, and a cracking forehand.
Goerges broke back once, but Kontaveit was unperturbed, once more piercing through the normally potent fifth seed’s serve and taking the set 6-2.
The Goerges forehand assisted her in set two, and it took effect on the scoreboard in the fourth game where a break occurred. Even with Kontaveit breaking back, and a slip in the sixth game, which slightly injured Goerges’ thigh, couldn’t stop the German player from levelling the match at 2-6 6-4.
Julia won 81% of points on her first serve in the second set.
Kontaveit came back in the decider, breaking Goerges twice, winning the match 6-2 4-6 6-4, and keeping herself in contention for the title.
