del Potro d Cilic - meets Nadal in semi

With Juan Martin del Potro (5) leading Marin Cilic (3) 7-6(5) 5-7 6-3 in the remaining men’s 2018 Roland Garros quarter final, it would be intriguing to see what set four could produce.  del Potro had won the last five games of set three to steal it from Cilic who had the momentum at the early stage.

Two games all in the fourth set and Cilic to deliver.

A forehand and backhand winner helped Cilic to 3-2.

del Potro hammered a forehand winner down the line, only his third, but a drop shot from Cilic took it to 30-30.  An ace for game point.  Deuce with a del Potro shot long.  Another game point - service winner and 3-3.

Two big serves from Cilic produced Argentine errors.  A third error on game point and Cilic held for 4-3

Big serving from del Potro enabled an easy love game for him to level at 4-4.

A love game in reply from Cilic and 5-4 - del Potro serving to stay in the set.

An ace and a wonderful sliced backhand winner on game point led del Potro to 5-5.

An Argentine forehand forced Cilic into error and vulnerable at 0-30.

Cilic netted a forehand and three break points came to del Potro.  One saved.  A backhand pushed wide and the break to del Potro.

He would be serving for the match. 6-5.

30-0 with two Croatian errors.  Another one and three match points.

del Potro won 7-6(5) 5-7 6-3 7-5 and will play Rafa Nadal in the semi final.

He also moves to number 4 in the world rankings, his equal career high.
