Barty defends Miami title

Final day in Miami Open - WTA 1000.

2021 Miami Open a WTA 1000 tournament, on Hard Outdoor, in Miami, Florida, USA, 22 March - 4 April 2021.
Event not held last year due to COVID-19.

Defending champion (2019):
Ashleigh Barty (12) who defeated Karolina Pliskova (5) 7-6(1) 6-3

Final:

Ashleigh Barty (1) (Australia) v Bianca Andreescu (8) (Canada)

In their first meeting, Ashleigh Barty took control from the outset, and although she wasn’t able to consolidate her initial break of the Andreescu serve, the top seed dominated the remainder of the first set and took it 6-3.

Continuing in the same fashion in set two, Barty was leading 2-0, and while defending a double break, Andreescu fell awkwardly, injuring an ankle.

The Canadian continued bravely, but eventually lost serve, and took a medical time out.

Barty easily held serve upon resumption, but clearly Andreescu was unable to compete with the injury, and sadly had to retire.

Ashleigh Barty defended her 2019 title 6-3 4-0 (retired).
