ATP Quarter finals

• Nick Kyrgios v Stan Wawrinka 

In a tough first set, Kyrgios suffered a gash on his right hand after a fall in the opening minutes.  It didn’t affect him too much, as he and Wawrinka held serve comfortably for eleven games.  Surprisingly, the Australian only delivered one ace for the set.

Wawrinka  at 5-6 presented a set point to Kyrgios when he sent a forehand wide, and Kyrgios converted with his forehand working much better, introducing a winner. 7-5.

Wawrinka had the chance to serve for set two, following a poor Kyrgios game full of unforced errors at 4-4.  His failure to hold serve was, however, replicated by the Swiss star, thanks in part to Australian forehands to the fore.

A tie break resolved things.  At 3-3, on the Kyrgios serve, Wawrinka hit a backhand winner, and he proceeded to win the remaining points, another winning backhand sealing the set 7-6(3).

With Kyrgios at 72% first serve in the deciding set, and winning 16 of 18 points on the primary attempt, Wawrinka had no chance.  Two break opportunities for Kyrgios came when Stan served at 2-2, and Nick used the second to deliver a telling forehand, effectively putting the contest to bed.

The only hope for Switzerland was the cramping experienced by Kyrgios late in the match, but it passed, as had all the complications thrown the way of the Australian in both this and the Nadal match a day earlier.

Wawrinka, the warrior that he is, saved two match points when serving at 3-5, and requested Kyrgios serve it out.

Nick Kyrgios did just that, winning 7-5 6-7(3) 6-4.
