ATP final

  • Nick Kyrgios v Alexander Zverev (2)

Kyrgios would need to defeat a third top ten player for the week (in fact the top three seeds) if he were to win the title, and Zverev had not dropped a set all tournament.

Kyrgios served first, and despite a Zverev winner, held comfortably with an ace and drop shot highlighted.  Zverev levelled easily, a lovely backhand the standout.

Kyrgios trailed 15-30 in game three but big deliveries put any concerns out of the picture.  2-1 to the Australian.

Twice Zverev ventured to the net in the next game, and both times he was countered by Kyrgios.  He ended up facing three break points.  One was saved by a German winner, but a forehand pushed wide presented Kyrgios with the break and a 3-1 lead.

Down 15-40 after a double fault, Kyrgios saved the break points and consolidated the service break to lead 4-1.

At 4-2 and 30-0, Kyrgios felt the pressure of Zverev returning his second serve, and a break point arrived.  A superbly disguised drop shot saved it and serve was held. 5-2.

The set was wrapped up 6-3 for the Australian.

Set two began with Kyrgios breaking Zverev, and then leading 30-0.  However, the German fought back, breaking for 1-1, holding easily, then having Kyrgios down two break points in the fourth game.  Both were saved and 2-2 was reached.

In the fifth game Zverev had 40-0, but Kyrgios brought it back to deuce, thanks to a reflex volley at the net, a stretch forehand that shocked Zverev, and a backhand power return down the line.

A Kyrgios drop shot lob combo produced break point and it wasn’t converted, the drop shot attempt poorly executed.

A brilliant backhand return winner brought up a second break point and a forehand winner completed the job.  3-2 Kyrgios.

A down the line backhand return winner from Zverev had Kyrgios 0-30, and a slip enabled the second seed to put a forehand past him.  Two break points had to be negotiated.

An ace and another big serve brought it back to deuce.  Eventually serve was held again and 4-2 the lead.

No more break points before Kyrgios went to the line serving for the title at 5-4.

An ace on a second serve was rewarded with two match points.

Only one was required as a service winner was delivered.

Nick Kyrgios defeated Alexander Zverev 6-3 6-4 to capture his fifth title, and move up 178 places to #11 in the 2019 ATP Race.

The ATP Rankings will reflect Kyrgios moving from #72 to #31 and based on this week, a spot back in the top twenty shouldn’t be far away.
