It’s Day Four in the Miami Open - round two matches in the ATP draw and round three matches in the WTA draw.
Miami Open presented by Itaú - an ATP Masters 1000 category tournament, on Hard Layklold, in Miami, Florida, USA, 20-31 March 2019.
Defending champion:
John Isner (14) who defeated Alexander Zverev (4) 6-7(4) 6-4 6-
ATP second round
- Denis Shapovalov (20) v lucky loser Daniel Evans
Shapovalov had played Evans twice before, in a Challenger tournament in 2016, and a Davis Cup match in 2017. Evans won both in three sets, the DC clash a best of five.
Shapovalov has progressed the quicker since then, now the highest ranked teenager at #23 in the world.
And the Canadian began as expected, holding his first two serves to love, and forcing Evans to save two break points in game two.
However, there was a turnaround in the fifth game with the Brit displaying some of his variety of shot making for which he is becoming renowned. He broke Shapovalov with his second opportunity and led 3-2.
With a full head of steam, Evans served two successive love games and eventually served out the set 6-4.
Shapovalov dominated set two, not having to face a break point, but converting both chances created on the Evans delivery. 6-1, and twenty eight of the forty four points available.
The decider saw Shapovalov in the fourth game waste two break chances with unforced errors, but he fought on, and the pressure exerted on Evans brought reward as the fourth break point was converted.
After that, it was a smooth run to the finish line, with just a small blip in the sixth game, two break points needing to be saved.
Denis Shapovalov won 4-6 6-1 6-3.
