Indian Wells about to start

On Monday 4 March in Indian Wells, the biggest individual tennis tournament since the Australian Open, began with qualifying matches.

It combines both WTA and ATP tours.

Defending champion:

Naomi Osaka who defeated Dasha Kasatkina (20) 6-3 6-2


The following players withdrew after entering but before the main draw was published:

  • Camila Giorgi replaced by Eugenie Bouchard 
  • Luksika Kumkhum replaced by Magda Linette 
  • Ekaterina Makarova replaced by Johanna Larsson 
  • Maria Sharapova (shoulder injury) replaced by Mona Barthel 

Naomi Osaka, world number 1, is top seed.

The other 31 seeds are all in the top 35

All 32 seeds have first round byes.

Defending champion:

Juan Martin del Potro (6) who defeated Roger Federer (1) 6-4 6-7(8) 7-6(2)


del Potro won’t be defending his title, and his place in the tournament was taken by Taro Daniel.

As well as del Potro, the following players withdrew after entering but before the main draw was published:

  • Aljaz Bedene replaced by Ryan Harrison 
  • Hyeon Chung replaced by Ilya Ivashka 
  • Richard Gasquet replaced by Federico Delbonis 
  • Vasek Pospisil replaced by Mackenzie McDonald 
  • Fernando Verdasco replaced by Ernests Gulbis 

Novak Djokovic, world number 1, is top seed.
