Indian Wells - Djokovic out in 3rd round shock

Day Seven at Indian Wells - round of sixteen matches for the WTA, and third round conclusion for the ATP.

ATP third round

• Denis Shapovalov (24) v Marin Cilic (10)

Shapovalov was excellent on serve in the opening set, winning all points on his first delivery.  The only break point faced by either player arose in game five, and Cilic suffered when the young Canadian converted.

Serving at 3-5, Cilic double faulted and the pair were at deuce.  An ace steadied things for the Croatian, but nevertheless Shapovalov still would serve for the set.

An ace was the perfect start, and a wicked backhand brought up three set points.  Appropriately the backhand was the shot to confirm the set for Shapovalov 6-4.

Cilic began set two in style, notably with a pair of forehand winners. He was matched by Shapovalov, whose serving continued to impress.  Taken to deuce in game three, Cilic managed to hold for 2-1.

Thereafter it was a Shapovalov clinic.

The Canadian held for 2-2, then on game point for Cilic, Shapovalov contributed a tremendous winning backhand passing shot. Break point arrived and left. Then with another break chance, Cilic netted a backhand volley and Shapovalov led 3-2.

Saving a couple of break points, Shapovalov consolidated for 4-2, then in game seven, on a second chance, cracked the Croatian delivery once more for 5-2.

Serving for the match, Shapovalov was taken to 30-30, but that was as close as it would come for Cilic, who was beaten up soundly by Denis Shapovalov 6-4 6-2
