Day Four at Indian Wells - the conclusion of second round matches for the WTA, and second round commencement for the ATP
BNP Paribas Open - an ATP Masters 1000 category tournament, on Hard Plexipave, in Indian Wells, California, USA, 4-17 March 2019.
Defending champion:
Juan Martin del Potro (6) who defeated Roger Federer (1) 6-4 6-7(8) 7-6(2)
ATP second round
- Novak Djokovic (1) v qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo
Djokovic hadn’t played a singles match since he held the Australian Open trophy aloft in January. His history against Fratangelo extended only to one match, and coincidentally it was here in Indian Wells three years ago, also in the second round. Djokovic won, but having to recover after dropping the opening set.
In the 2019 rematch, Fratangelo provided the world number one with more opening set headaches, being the first to achieve a service break.
This was in spite of worse statistics - the American had a lower first serve percentage, was winning less on both his initial and secondary serves than Djokovic, yet found himself serving at 5-4 to take the set.
Djokovic steeled himself, and managed to break back in the best of timely fashion, and eventually enter a tie break.
Fratangelo wasn’t to be denied, and he put pressure again on the top seed, leading 5-4 in the tie break with serves to come. Djokovic did as the conventional Djokovic in set two - settled following scraping through set one, he ran over the top of Fratangelo, winning 74% nts ve, and a healthy 52% of points on the American delivery.
Two service breaks while not facing a break point on his serve saw the best player victorious 7-6(5) 6-2.
This was the 50th match win at Indian Wells for Djokovic which has netted him five titles here.
