Sabalenka shock loss in Canada

First round matches were completed on Day Two in Hiroshima, and the same for Quebec City, except for two battles there which will take place on Day Three.


Quebec City 

  • In a major upset, Varvara Lepchenko defeated top seed Aryna Sabalenka.  Sabalenka had made the Cincinnati semi finals, won New Haven, and lost in the US Open round of sixteen to eventual winner Naomi Osaka.  Here, however, Lepchenko, quarter finalist last week in the lower level Chicago tournament, broke for a 3-2 lead in the opening set.  The American used this to take the lead 6-4.  Lepchenko achieved a service break at the same stage in set two.

Sabalenka saved a match point at 4-5, and forced a tie break Lepchenko raced ahead 4-0, before Sabalenka fought off two more match points, eventually falling short.  Lepchenko through 6-4 7-6(5)
