Sabalenka wins 2025 AO quarter final

2025 Australian Open, first Grand Slam tournament of the year, on Hard Outdoor, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 12-26 January 2025.

Defending champion:
Aryna Sabalenka (2) who defeated Zheng Qinwen (12) 6-3 6-2

Quarter final 2:

Aryna Sabalenka (1) (Belarus) v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (27) (Russia)

Pavlyuchenkova had a 2-1:head to head record over Sabalenka, but those matches were in 2019 and 2021.
Both players are aggressive, and rallies not guaranteed to be particularly long.

Sabalenka served first and was succinct in holding
Pavlyuchenkova was just as brutal.
After three games the score was Sabalenka ahead 2-1 but no sign of a service break.

The Pavlyuchenkova serve fell apart in game four and Sabalenka led 3-1.
To the Russian’s credit, she pushed Sabalenka in the next game, and there were two visits to deuce.

A love gsme from Pavlyuchenkova when serving in game six was further proof of her resilience.

However, when serving at 2-5 to stay in the set, double faults didn’t help.
Two outstanding winners from Sabalenka sealed the set 6-2.

All things appeared smooth for the top seed in set two, 1-1 and 40-15.
Then it turned around, with Pavlyuchenkova winning the next four points to break serve.

The break was consolidated and the lead for Pavlyuchenkova was 3-1.
Another break and 4-1.
The set was looking over for Sabalenka, and suddenly the match was up for grabs.

Sabalenka retrieved one of the breaks and trailed 2-4.
Pavlyuchenkova broke once more, and would serve for the set.

A love game and Pavlyuchenkova took the set 6-2.

The decider saw four successive breaks of serve.
The score was 2-2.

Finally serve was held, and games continued until it was 4-3, Sabalenka ahead.

In game eight, Pavlyuchenkova saved a break point.
She couldn’t save another one, and was broken, trailing 3-5.

Sabalenka served out the match 6-2 2-6 6-3, and reached the semi finals.
