Keys led head to head 3-2 previously.
However, the last time they met was in 2022.
They had met in an AO before, and Svitolina won the 2019 round of sixteen match in three sets.
Both players began well, Keys using her power, and Svitolina absorbing it.
Serve was held consistently, although Svitolina was required to save two break points in the fifth game.
The shock arrived in game eight, when Keys serving at 3-4 fell apart.
Svitolina broke and led 5-3.
The Ukrainian served out the set 6-3.
Keys saved a break point in the opening game of set two.
Svitolina saved three break points in game four.
Serve was held on each occasion and score was 2-2.
Keys broke serve in game six to lead 4-2.
No more break chances in the set which Keys served out 6-3.
Keys broke serve in game five of the decider.
She consolidated to lead 4-2.
No more break opportunities and Madison Keys served out the match 3-6 6-3 6-4.
Keys reaches the semis of the Australian Open for a third time, following 2015 and 2022.
