Swiatek won but that result is meaningless in terms of the 2025 AO.

Swiatek had the much superior Grand Slam tournament record, including here at Melbourne Park.
Therefore, she was heavy favourite to win the quarter final.

Almost predictably Swiatek broke serve in the opening game of set one.

Navarro took Swiatek to deuce in game four but serve was held and the lead was 3-1.

Swiatek broke in the following game and led 4-1.
Consolidation occurred for 5-1.

Serving to stay in the set, Navarro was broken a third time and Swiatek took the set 6-1.

The first five games of set two went with serve.
Two of those games were won by Swiatek but not easily.
In game one, she was taken to deuce, and in game five she had to save a break point.

Swiatek led 3-2, then broke for 4-2.

Navarro served at 2-5 to stay in the match, and was broken.

Swiatek won the match 6-1 6-2 and reached her second Australian Open semi final

Quarter final 2:

Novak Djokovic (7) (Serbia) v Carlos Alcaraz (3) (Spain)

The pair had met seven times, previously.
Djokovic led 4-3, although Alcaraz beat Djokovic in the past two Wimbledon finals.
Still, Djokovic had never lost to Alcaraz on a hard court.

In the quarter final, both players began with several blistering forehands highlighting a number of rallies.
Returning was excellent, and breaks were exchanged in the second and third games.

Both were taken to deuce in games five and six, but serves were held in each case.
3-3.

However, Djokovic pulled up sore with what looked like some sort of injury to his leg.
He was winching on some shots, but his serve seemed especially affected.

Serving at 4-4, Djokovic was being showered by the all court shot making of Alcaraz.
Two break points were saved, but not a third, and serve was broken.

Djokovic took a medical time out, and when he returned to court Alcaraz served out the set 6-4.

Djokovic broke Alcaraz in game two of set two, and consolidated for 3-0.
Alcaraz broke back in game five, then saved two break points before holding for 3-3.

Serving at 4-5 to stay in the set, Alcaraz was broken, and Djokovic took the set 6-4.

Sabalenka wins 2025 AO quarter final

2025 Australian Open - Women’s Singles Day 10 (2)

2025 Australian Open, first Grand Slam tournament of the year, on Hard Outdoor, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 12-26 January 2025.

Defending champion:
Aryna Sabalenka (2) who defeated Zheng Qinwen (12) 6-3 6-2

Quarter final 2:

Aryna Sabalenka (1) (Belarus) v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (27) (Russia)

Pavlyuchenkova had a 2-1:head to head record over Sabalenka, but those matches were in 2019 and 2021.
Both players are aggressive, and rallies not guaranteed to be particularly long.

Sabalenka served first and was succinct in holding
Pavlyuchenkova was just as brutal.
After three games the score was Sabalenka ahead 2-1 but no sign of a service break.

The Pavlyuchenkova serve fell apart in game four and Sabalenka led 3-1.
To the Russian’s credit, she pushed Sabalenka in the next game, and there were two visits to deuce.

A love gsme from Pavlyuchenkova when serving in game six was further proof of her resilience.

However, when serving at 2-5 to stay in the set, double faults didn’t help.
Two outstanding winners from Sabalenka sealed the set 6-2.

All things appeared smooth for the top seed in set two, 1-1 and 40-15.
Then it turned around, with Pavlyuchenkova winning the next four points to break serve.

The break was consolidated and the lead for Pavlyuchenkova was 3-1.
Another break and 4-1.
The set was looking over for Sabalenka, and suddenly the match was up for grabs.

Sabalenka retrieved one of the breaks and trailed 2-4.
Pavlyuchenkova broke once more, and would serve for the set.

A love game and Pavlyuchenkova took the set 6-2.

The decider saw four successive breaks of serve.
The score was 2-2.

Finally serve was held, and games continued until it was 4-3, Sabalenka ahead.

In game eight, Pavlyuchenkova saved a break point.
She couldn’t save another one, and was broken, trailing 3-5.

Sabalenka served out the match 6-2 2-6 6-3, and reached the semi finals.

Zverev into a third AO semi final

2025 Australian Open - Men’s Singles Day 10 (1)

2025 Australian Open, first Grand Slam tournament of the year, on Hard Outdoor, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 12-26 January 2025.

Defending champion:
Jannik Sinner (4) who defeated Daniil Medvedev (3) 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6

Quarter final (1):

Tommy Paul (12) (USA) v Alexander Zverev (2) (Germany)

Tommy Paul had a 2-0’ head to head record coming into the quarter final with Zverev, but those matches were in 2020 and 2022.
Here is where it matters, and Zverev has been a two time AO semi finalist, including last year.
Tommy Paul is a two time qualifier finalist, including this year.

Can we sack the American commentators from the Australian Open coverage ?
The bias is so much more pronounced this year, and the Tommy Paul love affair is cringe worthy.

Still, Mr Paul began well, taking Zverev to deuce in the German opening service game.
No drama and serve held.
Despite a double fault, Tommy included an affective drop shot in a variety of shot making, to ease into the match at 1-1.

Tommy was taking the Zverev serve early, and it began to pay dividends in game five.
The quick returns forced enough errors to arrive at break point.
Saved but a warning delivered.

The pattern of the match had emerged, and it continued, with no threat to either player on serve.

Tommy held when serving to stay in the set at 4-5.
Zverev served at 5-5.

He was down 0-40 and saved two break points.
He couldn’t save a third and was broken.

Paul served for the set, and was at 40-30.
The set point disappeared when Tommy hit a backhand long.
Double fault and break back point.
Backhand netted and a break, forcing a tie break.

From 2-1 in the tie bresk, Zverev won five straight points to take the set 7-6(1).

Tommy used his disappointment to maintain a positive attitude in set two, and he broke Zverev in the second game.

Tommy saved two break points and held for 5-2
Serving for the set at 5-4, he was broken to love.

Zverev saved a set point before levelling at 5-5.

A tie break was required, and Zverev swept it to love, took the set, and led 7-6(1) 7-6(0).

Undeterred, Tommy broke in the first game of set three.
He held his own serve throughout, and broke Zverev again in game seven to lead 5-2.

Tommy Paul served out the set 6-2.

In set four, Tommy was broken in games two and four, and Zverev held in game five.
A 5-0 lead.

Serving to stay in the match, Tommy saved a match point before holding for 1-5.

Serving for the match, Zverev saw one match point disappear, and he had to save two break points.
The next match point was converted with an ace.

Alexander Zverev won 7-6(1) 7-6(0) 2-6 6-1 and made the 2025 AO semi finals.

Badosa wins 2025 Australian Open quarter final

2025 Australian Open - Women’s Singles Day 10 (1)

2025 Australian Open, first Grand Slam tournament of the year, on Hard Outdoor, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 12-26 January 2025.

Defending champion:
Aryna Sabalenka (2) who defeated Zheng Qinwen (12) 6-3 6-2

Quarter final 1:

CoCo Gauff (3) (USA) v Paula Badosa (11) (Spain)

3-3 head to head, but CoCo would be happy to know she had won the past two clashes, both in 2024.
Each was a victory after losing the first set, so CoCo can win from anywhere.
Not as easy in a Grand Slam tournament.

Gauff served first, and held well, one backhand winner missed everything and ball ended flying out of the top of my television.
It barely missed one of my speakers.
Badosa was taking no rubbish from Gauff when she served, but all she received was rubbish, and the love game was a sinch.
Gauff’s second attempt from the line was a painful stretch with bresk points saved thanks to a patch of good serves.
Serve was held eventually, and they both sat down.

Gauff had Badosa at 0-30 in game four but donated three straight forehand errors.
The hard hitting hurt the net and probably the players feelings, but had little effect on the ability to hold serve.

Until Badosa lost patience

Serving at 5-5, Gauff was blasted with a forehand winner from the Badosa racquet.
Then Gauff sent a ball into a different postcode to be behind 0-30.
At 30-30,:Badosa simoly fired in a backhand volley winner and a forehand winner to achieve a service break.

No fuss next game to serve out the set 7-5.

Gauff served first in the second set, and it seemed as long as the women’s marathon.
Four break points were saved - the first with a powerful serve, the second with a forehand winner.
The third disappeared when Badosa hit a forehand somewhere in Australia but not inside a tennis court.
And number four found the bottom of the net where Badosa put it.

However, another uncontrolled forehand from Gauff gifted the break to Badosa who led 1-0.

Neither player filled anyone with confidence the serve could be held, and it was broken in games four, five, seven and eight accordingly.

Badosa served for the match at 5-4, after she failed to serve it out at 5-2.

An ace to start, and a serve forcing error to bring 30-15.
A second ace and two match points.
A forehand winner finished the contest.

Paula Badosa defeated CoCo Gauff 7-5 6-4 and advanced to the 2025 Australian Open semi finals.
