The opening game was a long one, where the Italian led 40-15, but couldn’t capitalise, and despite saving four break points, in the end dropped serve. Kerber delivered two love games on serve while in the meantime Cocciaretto did put a score on the board, although it took forever and 17 points.
At 2-4, after leading 40-0, Cocciaretto fell to more German pressure, losing the next five points, and going down a double break.
Kerber served the set out 6-2.
In set two, Cocciaretto lost her first three service games, and trailed 5-0. Kerber served for the match and had 40-15. Those two match points disappeared, and on the fourth break chance, Cocciaretto had success.
In her second attempt to serve it out, Kerber was sharper, and the love game sealed a second round berth for the 17th seed 6-2 6-2.
