Alexandrova, Rublev win 1st titles of 2019

The first titles of 2019 have been won, both by Russians, and another two trophies will be delivered in the next hours.


2020 Shenzhen Open - a WTA International tournament, on Hard, Plexipave, in Shenzhen, China, 4-11 January 2020.

Defending champion:

Aryna Sabalenka (1) who defeated Alison Riske 4-6 7-6(2) 6-3


Final result:


- Ekaterina Alexandrova (5) defeated Elena Rybakina (7) 6-2 6-4


This was the first victory on the WTA Tour for the Russian, who had only last month won a WTA 125K Series event in Limoges. Her victory will be reflected in a rankings rise to #26, a career high (previously 34). She will overtake Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova as number one Russian.


2020 Qatar ExxonMobil Open - an ATP 250 tournament, on Hard Plexicushion, in Doha, Qatar, 6-11 January 2020.

Defending champion:

Roberto Bautista Agut (7) who defeated wildcard Tomas Berdych 6-4 3-6 6-3


Final result:


- Andrey Rublev (2) defeated qualifier Corentin Moutet 6-2 7-6(3)


This was career title number three for Rublev, and he will crack the top 20 for the first time as a result. Two years ago, he made the final in Doha, but fell short to another Frenchman, Monfils. In 2020 he has gone the extra step.

Moutet will jump 10 spots to a new career high of #71, one of 12 from France in the top 82.


2020 ASB Classic - a WTA International tournament, on Hard, Greenset, in Auckland, New Zealand, 6-12 January 2020.

Defending champion:

Julia Goerges (2) who defeated qualifier Bianca Andreescu 2-6 7-5 6-1


Semi final results:


- Serena Williams (1) defeated Amanda Anisimova (3) 6-1 6-1

- Jessica Pegula defeated Caroline Wozniacki (5) 3-6 6-4 6-0,

and will play Serena Williams in an all American final.
