Rublev wins St Petersburg

Final decided in St Petersburg.

2020 St Petersburg Open an ATP 500 tournament, on Hard, Rebound Ace, in St Petersburg, Russia, 12-18 October 2020.
Defending champion:

Daniil Medvedev (1) who defeated Borna Ćorić (4) 6-3 6-1

Final:

Borna Ćorić (7) (Croatia) v Andrey Rublev (3) (Russia)

Rublev entered the final having won all three of three previous meetings between the pair.

The Russian found it easier to hold serve in the early stages, winning 12 of 16 points from the line, compared with Coric 9 of 14 to lead 3-2. Coric levelled, but only after saving a break point.

The next six games were a servers delight, a total of just six points surrendered in that period, and eventually a tie break settled set one.

Coric achieved the first point against serve, and retained the mini break until 5-4 where he had two serves to win the set. He lost both points though, and it was Rublev who stole it 7-6(5).

Only two games went to deuce in set two, both on the Coric serve. The seventh seed survived the first of these in game three, but Rublev converted the second of two break points in game five to give him the edge.

Rublev served out the match 7-6(5) 6-4 to earn his sixth career title, fourth in 2020, and second in his home country.

He moves up two places to a career high ranking of #8.
