Roland Garros 2020 - Women’s Singles 1/4 finals (1)

Day Ten of Roland Garros 2020, and the first of the women’s quarter finals.
Also the final round of sixteen match, delayed due to constant rain on Day Nine.

2019 champion (not defending):

Ashleigh Barty (8) who defeated Markéta Vondroušová 6-1 6-3


Round of sixteen 

Danielle Collins defeated Ons Jabeur (30) 6-4 4-6 6-4
There were only three service breaks in the opening two sets, but in the decider six of the first seven games went against serve. 
Both then held, but Jabeur failed at 4-5, and a fifth unseeded player reached the final eight.

Quarter finals 

Iga Swiatek v qualifier Martina Trevisan 

Martina Trevisan began brightly, taking a 3-0 lead in set one, but from there, Iga Swiatek displayed the tennis which had seen her defeat last years runner-up Marketa Vondrousova and also the world #2 and 2018 champion Simona Halep.
A run of nine straight games to the Polish teenager was stopped when the Italian qualifier broke to trail 1-3 in set two.
However, Trevisan’s inability to hold serve continued, and Swiatek broke once more to move within two games of a semi final berth.
Serving at 1-5, Trevisan could not hold out the surge of Swiatek who won the encounter 6-3 6-1, and become the first Polish woman to make the Roland Garros semi finals in the Open Era.

Qualifier Nadia Podoroska defeated Elina Svitolina (3) 6-2 6-4

Svitolina began by breaking Podoroska in the opening game, then proceeded to lose the next five games, broken three successive times.
Podoroska stumbled when serving for the set, but rectified things by breaking Svitolina a fourth time for 6-2. 17 winners to Svitolina’s 2.
Set two started with two service holds, then six service breaks followed.
Podoroska held, then Svitolina saved two match points before surrendering.
The Argentine qualifier, ranked 131, has reached the semis with her 6-2 6-4 victory and will be now be in the top 50.
First qualifier in the final four at Roland Garros in the Open Era, and first Argentine woman in the Roland Garros semis since Paula Suárez 2004.
