Thiem wins US Open in 5 set comeback

Day Fourteen of the US Open and the men’s singles final.

Alexander Zverev (5) (Germany) v Dominic Thiem (2) (Austria)

The knockers of Alexander Zverev have been numerous and vocal over the past few years, noting his failure to perform at Grand Slam tournaments.
Of course his excellent results elsewhere, and relative youth should allow him some space to grow, and be patient. He has the potential to be anything with his talent and weapons on the tennis court.
And this year he has begun to flourish, the US Open ultimate proof.

In the semi final, he for the first time in his career turned a two set deficit into a victory, and in his debut major final, against someone who had been there three times before, he lit up New York. For two sets.
Thiem then reversed the trend and showed the empty stadium why he is widely predicted to lead the world once the Big Three have left the mantle.

At two sets apiece, the fifth set was the proverbial roller coaster.
The opening two games were service breaks, then the seventh game saw Zverev break and he served for the title at 5-3. Thiem broke back, and then broke again, earning the right to serve himself for the match at 6-5.
Zverev denied Thiem and the title would be decided by a tie break.
Serving at 4-3, Zverev lost a crucial point and Thiem proceeded to have two match points, serving at 6-4.
Zverev saved both, but lost a point when serving at 6-6.
Thiem served it out and won the 2020 US Open 2-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6(6)
