US Open 2020 - Men’s Singles quarter finals (1)

Day Nine of the US Open and the first two quarter finals were played.

Quarter final results:

Pablo Carreño Busta (20) (Spain) defeated Denis Shapovalov (12) (Canada) 3-6 7-6(5) 7-6(4) 0-6 6-3

A long and fascinating match where the victory predictions changed constantly. Shapovalov’s serving was at times his greatest enemy, but then put him back into the contest with winning stretches.
After fighting back to a tie break in set three, the Canadian was shattered to eventually lose and trail two sets to one. His response was to unleash a stellar set of tennis - 16 winners, just 3 unforced errors, no lost points from his 3 service games. And three breaks of the Spaniard’s delivery.
Despite the 0-6 result, Pablo settled and faced no break points in the decider, instead placing pressure on Shapovalov, breaking him in the sixth game, a double fault sealing it.

Alexander Zverev (5) (Germany) defeated Borna Ćorić (27) (Croatia) 1-6 7-6(5) 7-6(1) 6-3

Zverev served up 18 aces among his 52 winners, and after a listless error filled opening set, was rewarded for his creative attack.
Coric was certainly not without chances, but couldn’t grab the two set lead which would have swung things differently.
