Defending champion:
Karolina Pliskova (4) who defeated Johanna Konta 6-3 6-4
Quarter final results:
- Simona Halep (1) defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-2 2-0 (retired)
Not the best way to end a match, but Putintseva has done well, making her first quarter final at a Premier 5 tournament, following on her first US Open quarter final.
Halep has made the semis for a fifth time.
- Garbiñe Muguruza (9) defeated Victoria Azarenka 3-6 6-3 6-4
In a match up worthy of a final, Muguruza fought hard to gain the win and gain a place in her third Rome semi final, following 2016-17.
- Markéta Vondroušová (12) defeated Elina Svitolina (4) 6-3 6-0
Vondroušová has gone one better than last years Rome quarter final and reached her first Premier 5 semi final. This was her first win over Svitolina after three previous losses.
- Karolina Pliskova (2) defeated Elise Mertens (11) 6-3 3-6 6-0
The pair had only met once before, on the grass at Eastbourne last year, where Pliskova obliterated the Belgian. Mertens at least pushed the second seed to a third set here, but the decider was a disaster. Although the end was empty, Mertens can take heart from a quarter final finish considering this was only her second Rome appearance after a first round loss in 2019.
Pliskova’s title defence is on target.
