Rome - ATP Masters 1000 quarter finals

Quarter final day in Rome ATP Masters 1000.

2020 Internazionali BNL d’Italia - an ATP Masters 1000 category tournament, on Red Clay, in Rome, Italy, 14-21 September 2020.

Defending champion:

Rafael Nadal (2) who defeated Novak Djokovic (1) 6-0 4-6 6-1

Quarter final results:

- Novak Djokovic (1) defeated qualifier Dominik Koepfer 6-3 4-6 6-3

Despite the loss, Koepfer managed to win through qualifying to reach the main draw of his first Masters 1000 tournament, and pushed Djokovic to the limit, saving 15 of the 21 break points available to the world number one during the encounter.

Koepfer will jump 31 places to a career high ranking of #56 (previous #83)

- Casper Ruud defeated Matteo Berrettini (4) 4-6 6-3 7-6(5)

The previous best performance at a Masters 1000 tournament for Ruud was the round of sixteen here last year. So a semi final is rarified air for the Norwegian. He also continues a rise in the rankings, four more spots up to a new best of #30.

- Denis Shapovalov (12) defeated Grigor Dimitrov (15) 6-2 3-6 6-2

With the victory, Shapovalov ensures a rise into the worlds top ten, provided Schwartzman doesn’t win the tournament, and that is within his control as the pair will meet next.

Irrespective, he will achieve a new career high ranking.

The Canadian is now in his first Rome semi final, but his fifth in Masters 1000 tournaments overall.

- Diego Schwartzman (8) defeated Rafael Nadal (2) 6-2 7-5

Schwartzman had lost all his nine attempts to beat Nadal before this memorable victory. Nadal was aiming for a tenth Rome title and 36th Masters 1000 triumph but that has evaporated at the hands of the Argentine.

Schwartzman was also a semi finalist here last year, and took Djokovic to three sets. He will be hoping to go two steps further this year.

Semi final match ups
