Tsurenko d Kontaveit in Brisbane quarters

Day Four of the Brisbane International included the first of the quarter finals.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated lucky loser Taro Daniel 7-6(5) 6-3

ATP quarter finals:

Jeremy Chardy defeated qualifier Yasutaka Uchiyama 6-4 3-6 7-6(4)

Kei Nishikori (2) defeated Grigor Dimitrov (6) 7-5 7-5 and will play Jeremy Chardy in a semi final

WTA quarter finals:

Naomi Osaka (2) defeated Anastasija Sevastova (8) 3-6 6-0 6-4

An unseeded quarter final featured Anett Kontaveit against Lesia Tsurenko.

Kontaveit had eliminated fourth seed Petra Kvitova in the second round, while Tsurenko dismissed Australian Kimberly Birrell, who had in turn captured the huge scalp of top ten player Dasha Kasatkina in the opening round.

The winner of this clash would meet Osaka in one semi final.

Kontaveit hit a range of heavy shots to hold serve and threaten to break the Tsurenko delivery.  Two break points were saved and games were one all.

A stunning forehand, followed by a winning backhand, set up a love game for Kontaveit who had settled well and led 2-1.  Tsurenko replied in kind, an ace included, surrendering just one point to square things at 2-2.

Forehands flowed off the racquets especially strong from both players as serves were held through seven games.  However, an error on a second break point, when serving at 3-4, cost Tsurenko, and Kontaveit could serve for the set.

A series of forehands set up an overhead winner and set point for Kontaveit, but she couldn’t convert.

A second set point went begging with a Tsurenko winner, and a double fault gifted the break back.  4-5 Tsurenko with serve to come.

Momentum now with the Ukrainian and games were levelled thanks to another Tsurenko forehand winner.

A quality rally was finished with a brilliant Tsurenko backhand down the line which saved a game point.  A break point arrived, and a netted Estonian backhand donated the game to Tsurenko.  Now it was Lesia serving for the opening set at 6-5.

Solid serving, backed up with equally sound ground shots, enabled Tsurenko to breeze through the next game to love, and win the first set 7-5.

Lesia dominated the second set, breaking Anett in the opening game, sealing it with a winning forehand, to make it five successive games.

14 of 16 points on first serve, and facing no break points, was too much for a tired looking Kontaveit, who was broken once more in the eventual victory for an impressive Lesia Tsurenko 7-5 6-3.

Interestingly, the Men’s Doubles semis are without the top three seeded teams, while the Women’s Doubles semis consist of all the top four seeded teams.
