Day 5 of Australian Open 2019, and second match on Rod Laver Arena was:
Taylor Fritz (USA) v Roger Federer (3) (SUI)
Fritz opened proceedings and with a pair of aces, held serve. 1-0. Federer hit a single winner, but forced Fritz into error for a love game. 1-1.
Fritz began with an ace, but was overwhelmed and broken to trail 1-2.
Federer double faulted but an ace balanced that and he consolidated the break to lead 3-1. Two winners had Fritz at 30-15, but he lapsed and lost another serve. Federer 4-1. A love game, with two winners, and Federer increased the gap to 5-1.
Fritz served a love game, sealing it with an ace for 2-5.

Fritz opened set two well, with an ace and a service winner. 1-0. Federer replied with another love game, ace and forehand winner included. 1-1. Fritz raced to 40-0, but was reined in, and two Swiss forehand winners created a break point. It was saved, and an ace helped Fritz to hold and lead 2-1. Federer levelled without loss of a point, ending with an ace.
A couple of forehand winners were included in the fifth game where Fritz held for 3-2.
Federer served an ace and a double fault before holding for 3-3.
5-5 without further break.
Federer had two break points, thanks to Fritz errors. One was saved with an American winner, but a Swiss winner took the set 7-5
The first two games of set three were easy holds of serve, and 1-1.
From 30-0, Fritz fell away and faced break point. It was saved after a 25 stroke rally. Another break point arrived, and this one couldn’t be erased. Federer 2-1.

Two forehand winners and Federer had two more break points, as Fritz was falling apart. One was saved but not the next as a forehand forced error was made. 4-1.
Forehand and service winners contributed to a Federer hold, and he had a 5-1 lead.
An ace and a backhand winner from Fritz assisted him to 2-5.
When serving for the match, Federer hit forehand and service winners, and the match was finished when Fritz hit a forehand long.
Roger Federer won 6-2 7-5 6-2.
