AO - Djokovic d Nishikori who retired, injured

Day 10 of Australian Open 2019, and the remaining quarter final.

The premier match in the night session on Rod Laver Arena was:

Novak Djokovic (1) (SRB) v Kei Nishikori (8) (JPN)

Djokovic served first.

Winning to love, Djokovic looked the goods.  1-0.

Nishikori struggled, wasting a game point with an unforced backhand error, then another with a forehand unforced error.  With a break chance, Djokovic was donated another backhand unforced error, and the top seed led 2-0.

A double fault was the only point lost as Djokovic raced to a 3-0 lead, and Nishikori appeared hampered in his movement.

The Japanese number one held serve for 1-3, but had no answers to Djokovic for the remainder of the set, which was won 6-1.

Nishikori took a medical timeout, and began set two with a solid service hold.  However the quadricep injury was going to prevent him being competitive for the rest of the match, and after losing the next four games, Nishikori retired, thinking more of his health than the tournament.

Novak Djokovic won 6-1 4-1 (retired) and advanced to a semi final against Lucas Pouille.  The pair had never played each other before.
