AO - Djokovic d Tsonga in enjoyable clash

The second match in the night session on Day / Night Four of the 2019 Australian Open on RLA.


Novak Djokovic (1) v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Djokovic served first - two aces and a forehand winner. 1-0.

A love game from Tsonga, finished with an ace. 1-1.  Forehand winner from Djokovic 30-0.  Ace and two game points.  Service winner 2-1

Backhand from Djokovic forced an error 0-15.  Netted forehand from Tsonga and two break points.  Forehand cross court winner and the break. 3-1 Djokovic.

Wild forehand from Tsonga. 15-0.  Djokovic error 15-15.  Sharp volley 30-15.  Backhand into net by Djokovic and deuce. Ace and Djokovic error. Deuce again. Ace and error. Third deuce. Tsonga forehand winner and break point. Converted. 3-2 Djokovic, on serve.


Double fault from Tsonga followed by winning forehand 30-15.  Djokovic backhand did damage 30-30.  Netted Tsonga forehand and break point.  Big serve and deuce.  Wild Tsonga forehand and second break point. Another poor forehand and Djokovic ahead 4-2.

Djokovic ace for 30-0.  Another ace and the love game put Djokovic ahead 5-2.

Tsonga forehand winner and Djokovic backhand error 30-15.  Djokovic forehand winner and 40-30.  Tsonga backhand for the game. Djokovic to serve for the set at 5-3.

Three set points - one saved with a Tsonga backhand, but Djokovic sealed it the next point 6-3.


Tsonga opened set two with a love game 1-0.

Two Tsonga forehands had him up a break point, but Djokovic survived for 1-1. Tsonga’s winning forehand finished the next game and he was ahead 2-1.  Djokovic levelled, a couple of forehands assisting.

Tsonga led 3-2 after a game featuring another ace.  

Tsonga hit a backhand winner to create two break points, but Djokovic saved them and won the game with a forehand winner of his own. 3-3.

From 30-15, Tsonga donated three straight forehand unforced errors and Djokovic broke serve. 4-3 to the number one seed.

A love game with two winners and Djokovic extended his margin to 5-3.

Two aces contributed to a Tsonga hold and he forced Djokovic to serve for the set.


Djokovic played a shocker, losing his serve to love, and Tsonga levelled at 5-5.

Tsonga saved three break points, the second with an ace, the third with a forehand winner.  An ace gave him game point, but three unforced errors gifted the break to Djokovic who had a second chance to serve for the set.

With three set points up his sleeve, Djokovic delivered a forehand winner to take the set 7-5.


Tsonga began set three in style, winning the opening game to love, incorporating an ace and winning forehand. 1-0.  Djokovic followed suit, a pair of aces donated.  Tsonga’s forehand winner count shot up some more as he held serve again for 2-1.

A Djokovic backhand finished his service game at 2-2.

Tsonga raced to 40-0, only to fall to deuce, thanks to errors forced by Djokovic and a winner off the forehand.  Two more game points came and went, before the French serve was lost. Djokovic ahead two sets and a break 3-2

Two forehand winners and an ace from Serbia. 4-2.  Tsonga struck three forehand winners and trailed 3-4.


Djokovic double faulted for 30-30 but cleaned up to lead 5-3 and near victory.  Tsonga held serve.  4-5.

Two aces from the Djokovic armoury, the second bringing up two match points.  The world’s best forced a backhand error and the night ended with a Novak Djokovic celebration 6-3 7-5 6-4.

It was a solid contest given by Jo-Wildried Tsonga in defeat.
