AO - Raonic d Zverev and form continues

Day 8 of Australian Open 2019, and the round of sixteen. Second match on Rod Laver Arena was:

Alexander Zverev (4) (GER) v Milos Raonic (16) (CAN)

Raonic served first.  Zverev achieved the break, backhand errors ending the game. 1-0 to the German.

Zverev was down 0-40 on serve.  He fought back to deuce before saving two break points. Raonic created another break chance with a forehand winner.  He broke back with a repeat forehand 1-1.

The Canadian, with three winners, moved ahead 2-1.  A double fault and unforced errors saw Zverev facing two break points.  He saved one, but a Raonic backhand produced the break and a 3-1 advantage.

4-1 after several Zverev forced errors.

Zverev saved three break points, but on the fourth, Raonic hit a forehand winner 5-1.

A pair of forehand winners and a service winner gave Raonic three set points.   An ace won him the set 6-1.  Amazingly it was his first ace for the match.

In the opening game of set two, Zverev was down three break points, after two double faults. He lost serve on the third break point, a Raonic forehand winner doing the job. 1-0 Raonic.

2-0 after Raonic held serve, forcing Zverev into several errors.

Zverev held serve, relying on Canadian errors. 1-2.  An ace and a backhand winner helped Raonic hold and lead 3-1.  Three double faults and Zverev dropped serve again to trail 1-4.

Raonic held, two aces the final points, and led 5-1.

Zverev was down two set points following a Raonic backhand winner.  A Canadian forehand winner on the next point finished the set and Raonic led 6-1 6-1.

Nine games went by without a break point, in set three.

At 4-5, and 15-40, Zverev saved 2 match points, forcing Raonic into error, before eventually holding for 5-5.

Raonic started and ended with an ace in his love game, and led 6-5.

Zverev followed, also with a love game, and a tie break was necessary.

Zverev led 3-1 with a mini break and he held that advantage to 4-2.  Raonic won the next four points to have two match points.

One was saved, but the next saw a Canadian forehand winner and Milos Raonic won 6-1 6-1 7-6(5).

He reached the quarter finals, and for Zverev another disappointment in a Grand Slam tournament.
