Titles for Klizan and Fognini

Day Six of the weeks ATP and WTA tournaments and the results were as follows

The Kitzbuhel final was one sided as qualifier Martin Klizan collected his sixth ATP trophy from his sixth final.  Fellow qualifier Denis Istomin could not compete with Klizan who served and returned consistently well throughout.

Washington:

ATP

Quarter final

The postponed match between Andrey Rublev (16) and Denis Kudla was completed with Rublev successful 6-1 6-4

He would meet Alex de Minaur in the semis later in the day.

Semi finals

Defending champion Sascha Zverev (1) defeated Stefano Tsitsipas (10) 6-2 6-4

He will play Alex de Minaur in the final, following the Australian’s success over Andrey Rublev (16) in a classic three setter 5-7 7-6(6) 6-4.  de Minaur saved four match points in the second set tie break on his way to victory, and into his second tour final, the first at ATP 500 level.

The Aussie is now ranked 45, an improvement of 23 from his previous career high of 68.  Now Australian number 2, after starting 2018 outside the world 200.  A title win and the ranking becomes 33

WTA

Quarter finals

Sveta Kuznetsova continued where she left off in her unfinished match with Yulia Putintseva (8) to win 6-2 6-2 and book a semi final berth against Andrea Petkovic

Vekic, who led Magda Linette 3-0 overnight, proceeded to win that clash 6-1 7-6(0)

The remaining quarter final was won by Saisai Zheng who defeated qualifier Allie Kiick 6-3 6-1, and earned the right to play Donna Vekic (7) in the other semi.

Semi finals

Sveta Kuznetsova hadn’t dropped a set in the tournament to date, and she maintained that perfect record when accounting for Andrea Petkovic 6-2 6-2.  It sent the Russian to the final, her first since the Indian Wells Premier Mandatory tournament in March 2017.

Kuznetsova won 48 games and lost just 14 in reaching the finale.

Her final opponent is Donna Vekic (7) who defeated Saisai Zheng 7-5 6-3 in her semi.

Vekic last played a WTA final in Nottingham June 2017, where she defeated Johanna Konta on grass.

San Jose:

Semi finals

Mihaela Buzarnescu (5) defeated Elise Mertens (4) 4-6 6-3 6-1

Maria Sakkari defeated Danielle Collins and will play Buzarnescu in the final.

Down a set and double break, this was an outstanding recovery from Sakkari to reach her first WTA Tour Final.

It was total aggression and an effective powerful backhand that were key factors for Collins as she broke twice in set one, and led 6-3.

It was worse for Sakkari when trailing 0-4 in the second set.  The turning point was here, and the Greek player took advantage of greater frequency of American errors.  Coupled with her own tighter game, Sakkari drew level at 4-4

Maria even had set points at 5-4, but Collins avoided that crisis.  However, Sakkari broke for the third time in the set and levelled at 2-6 7-5.

Collins was overwhelmed and the trend continued in the decider where Sakkari dominated in most instances, eventually winning 3-6 7-5 6-2.

Her ranking will improve to a career high of 31, and if she wins the title, it will be 26.

Los Cabos:

Fabio Fognini (2) defeated Juan Martin del Potro (1), surprisingly with ease, to win the title 6-4 6-2.  This is the eighth career title for Fognini, his third for 2018, but his first ever on a hard court (all others on clay)

del Potro began well, leading 3-0, but Fognini won 12 of the final 15 games.
