Out of Canada and into the United States come the best players on both the ATP and WTA Tours, landing in Cincinnati.
The Western & Southern Open is responsible for both another Masters 1000 men’s tournament and another Premier 5 women’s event, on a hard deco turf II surface.
ATP:
Rafa Nadal is top seed, all of the worlds top ten are playing, and all 16 seeds are in the top twenty.
Already, a strong qualifying has completed and many accomplished players have missed out on the main draw.
The top eight seeds have first round byes.
Two first round matches have been resolved -
Kyle Edmund (14) defeated wildcard Mackenzie McDonald 6-3 6-2
Adrian Mannarino defeated Marco Cecchinato 6-7(7) 6-2 7-6(7)
Day Two of main draw action has a number of matches to highlight:
- Battle of the American big servers John Isner (9) v Sam Querrey
- Lucas Pouille (16) v wildcard Andy Murray, carefully marking his comeback
- Wildcard Stan Wawrinka v Diego Schwartzman (12)
- Battle of the youngsters Frances Tiafoe v Denis Shapovalov
WTA:
Simona Halep is top seed, all of the worlds top ten are playing, and all seeds are in the top twenty.
Venus Williams, the original 14th seed, is a late withdrawal due to a knee injury, and her place in the main draw is taken by Naomi Osaka, upgraded to 17th seed.
Others missing include Mihaela Buzarnescu, ranked 20, with a badly injured ankle, Maria Sharapova, ranked 21, with a shoulder problem, and Dominika Cibulková, ranked 26, with illness.
The top eight seeds have first round byes.
Day Two of main draw action (effectively day one for the women) is full of potential, including:
