Overall, the set was fairly even, and only one break point was available to each player.

Lajovic converted his and won the set 6-4.

San Jose:

Second round

The second seed and defending champion (the tournament held at Stanford from 1997-2017), Madison Keys, joined top seed Garbiñe Muguruza as a withdrawal from the tournament, and her place in the main draw was taken by lucky loser Magdalena Frech from Poland.

Her second round match was against Ajla Tomljanovic

Tomljanovic defeated Frech 6-4 3-6 6-3

Mihaela Buzarnescu (5) defeated qualifier Amanda Anisimova 7-5 2-6 6-1.  Anisimova was down 0-2 in set two and seemingly gone for all money the way she was playing.  All of a sudden she reeled off six successive games to take the match into a decider.  Her inconsistency continued and she eventually lost the match, but at 16 Amanda has a wealth of talent and the future promises much.

Buzarnescu will play Tomljanovic in the quarter finals

Maria Sakkari was a deal or two quicker in dispatching Tímea Babos (8) 6-0 6-1, using just 55 minutes of her valuable time.

Wildcard Venus  Williams (3) defeated Heather Watson 6-4 4-6 6-0 and will play Maria Sakkari in the quarter finals
