New Haven and Winston-Salem underway

This week the ATP Tour moved south east in the USA to Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the Winston-Salem Open, an ATP 250 category tournament.

The WTA Tour moved north east to New Haven, Connecticut for the Connecticut Open, a Premier category tournament.


ATP Winston-Salem:

With the withdrawal of top seed David Goffin, lucky loser Guido Andreozzi gained a main draw spot and qualifier Radu Albot took Goffin’s place at the top of the draw.

Second seed Pablo Carreno Busta, world ranked 12, is the highest ranked player now, and heads the remaining 14 seeds, 13 of whom are in the top 50. 

All of the seeds have first round byes.


Sunday’s First round results:

  • Daniil Medvedev defeated Mirza Basic 6-4 6-4
  • Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Benoit Paire 7-6(5) 6-3
  • Andreas Seppi defeated Joao Sousa 7-5 6-4
  • Roberto Carballes Baena defeated Guido Pella 6-4 6-2
  • Guillermo Garcia-Lopez defeated Marcos Baghdatis 7-6(2) 6-4


WTA New Haven:

Ash Barty, the sixth seed, withdrew through illness and was replaced by lucky loser Samantha Stosur.  Defending champion Dasha Gavrilova was installed as ninth seed.

Top seed is Simona Halep, who continues her busy run up to Flushing Meadows next week.  Four other seeds are in the top ten, and one in the top 20.

The top two seeds have first round byes.


Sunday’s First round results:

  • Dasha Gavrilova (9) defeated Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2 6-1
  • Magdaléna Rybáriková defeated wildcard CoCo Vandeweghe 2-6 6-4 2-3 (retired).  Vandeweghe has had an ordinary 2018, much of it affected by injury, and her latest ankle problems are ill timed with the US Open around the corner.
  • Julia Goerges (5) defeated Dominika Cibulková 6-3 6-1
  • Carla Suarez Navarro defeated Barbora Strycova (8) 7-6(6) 6-4
